First Motorbike Ride from Munich to Phnom Penh to Arrive at Oktoberfest Cambodia: A Journey of Passion and Purpose

In an extraordinary feat of endurance, dedication, and charity, Oum Bunreth, a 44-year-old motorcycle enthusiast and President of the BMW Club Cambodia, embarks on an epic journey from Munich, the headquarters of BMW and the BMW Motorrad Days in Garmisch Partenkirchen (July 5th – 7th), to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This remarkable ride, commencing on July 5th, will conclude in Phnom Penh on October 25th, where Bunreth arrives just in time for the grand celebration of Oktoberfest Cambodia.

The journey not only symbolizes the strong historical and cultural ties between Germany and Cambodia but also aims to support the Kantha Bopha Foundation, which provides free healthcare to millions of children in Cambodia. Additionally, the ride serves to promote Cambodia as a passionate, friendly country open to tourism from Europe and the world.

A Journey Rooted in Tradition and Innovation
Munich, the birthplace of BMW and the Oktoberfest, serves as the symbolic starting point of this journey. BMW, renowned for its engineering excellence and innovation in the automotive industry, is the perfect launch pad for this endeavor. The Oktoberfest, a traditional German celebration that has grown to be a global phenomenon, further underscores the cultural bridge between Germany and Cambodia.

Oum Bunreth, who has led the BMW Club Cambodia since 2016, will traverse multiple countries and diverse landscapes on his BMW motorcycle, showcasing the durability and performance of the brand alongside his own commitment. His journey will cover thousands of miles, encountering various terrains and weather conditions, demonstrating not only personal resilience but also the superior engineering of BMW motorcycles.

Supporting a Noble Cause
Bunreth’s journey is more than a testament to endurance and adventure; it is a mission with a profound humanitarian purpose. He is riding to raise funds for the Kantha Bopha Foundation, an organization founded by Swiss national Beat Richner and today administered by the Royal Cambodian Government. The foundation runs multiple children’s hospitals in Cambodia, providing free healthcare to millions of children in need. Bunreth’s mission is to bring attention to the critical work of the Kantha Bopha Foundation and to raise substantial funds to support its operations. “I am riding for the future of Cambodia’s children. Every mile I cover brings us closer to providing better healthcare for our kids,” said Bunreth.

Promoting Cambodia to the World
A key component of Bunreth’s ride is to highlight Cambodia as a welcoming and vibrant destination for tourists from Europe and beyond. By undertaking this journey, Bunreth aims to showcase Cambodia’s rich culture, friendly people, and stunning landscapes, encouraging more visitors to explore the beauty and warmth of his home country. “Cambodia is a land of incredible history, culture, and natural beauty. Through this ride, I hope to inspire more people to visit and experience the hospitality and wonders that Cambodia has to offer,” Bunreth added.

Global and Local Support
The motorbike ride has garnered significant support from both German and Cambodian organizations. German Business Cambodia (GBC), the German Embassy in Cambodia, and the German Ambassador, Stefan Messerer, are all backing this initiative. They will be sharing updates and milestones of Bunreth’s journey on their social media channels, ensuring that the world follows this incredible adventure.

“I am thrilled to support Bunreth on this inspiring journey. It reflects the strong ties between our countries and highlights the importance of this partnership in supporting vital causes,” said German Ambassador Stefan Messerer. “Kantha Bopha is a highly efficient organization, and any support for the foundation directly supports Cambodia’s children”.

In addition, Cambodia’s leading beer brand, Hanuman beer, along with other partners, is sponsoring the ride. Their support not only highlights the importance of the cause but also demonstrates the collaborative spirit between local and international entities in supporting Cambodia’s important causes.

A Grand Arrival at Oktoberfest Cambodia
The journey will culminate in Phnom Penh on October 25th, coinciding with Oktoberfest Cambodia, a festival that brings the spirit of the traditional German Oktoberfest to Cambodian shores. This event will be a grand celebration of Bunreth’s achievements, featuring traditional German music, food, and beer.

“We are excited to welcome Bunreth at Oktoberfest Cambodia. His journey embodies the spirit of Oktoberfest – conviviality, solidarity, international friendship, and joy. We are proud to support his mission and look forward to celebrating his arrival at the Oktoberfest,” said Tassilo Brinzer, president of the GBC and Chairman of EuroCham Cambodia, and a host of the Oktoberfest Cambodia. “A share of every ticket and beer sold will go toward the fundraising drive of Bunreth, and we will ask all guests and sponsors to support as well”, he added.

About Kantha Bopha Foundation:
The Kantha Bopha Foundation, founded by the late Swiss pediatrician Dr. Beat Richner, is dedicated to providing free, high-quality healthcare to children in Cambodia. The annual budget of the Foundation, which operates five pediatric hospitals in Cambodia, is approximately $45 million. This budget covers all operational costs, including salaries for medical staff, the procurement of medical supplies and equipment, maintenance of hospital facilities, and other necessary expenses to ensure the delivery of high-quality, free healthcare to children.

Each year, the foundation treats millions of children, providing a wide range of medical services, from routine vaccinations to complex surgeries. The cost per child treated averages out to a few hundred dollars, which is remarkably efficient given the comprehensive nature of the care provided. The foundation relies heavily on donations from individuals, organizations, and governments to meet its financial needs and continue its vital work in improving child health in Cambodia.

Importantly, by offering free treatment, the Kantha Bopha Foundation not only saves lives but also relieves the financial burden on families, contributing significantly to the overall well-being and future potential of Cambodian children.
